ArenaNet, a company founded by a group of former Blizzard employees, released Guild Wars in 2005 and the game's full impact is still being felt. While the game blurs the lines between genres on a number of levels. Most prominently, it was a welcome break in the wave of subscription based massively-multiplayer games being released. It proved that a high quality free-to-play online game, where players only had to buy the game itself and subsequent expansions, could be successful. Guild Wars features a huge list of abilities spread out across eight classes from three gorgeous campaigns (four if you count the Eye of the North expansion) - each one a full game on its own. Despite having to manage all complex power balancing, Guild Wars is famous for its excellent player-vs-player content, which is helped by its easy to learn but difficult to master gameplay that very closely resembles action role-playing games like Diablo.
